Government is progressing with significant legislative improvements for the UK real estate funds sector that include the Long-Term Asset Fund, Qualifying Asset Holding Company, Real Estate Investment Trust and Professional Investor Fund contractual scheme.

Christopher Austin

Head of Tax, Private Assets, Schroders

Christopher is an experienced tax advisor with over 20 years experience in the investment management industry.  He has been at Schroders since April 2006 and has expertise in a wide range of international taxes. Before Schroders he was at Deloitte for 8 years where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser, working in the banking, investment management, and real estate sectors as well as a period working on tax policy.

Christopher’s current focus is supporting the growth of the Private Assets business within Schroders through close working with the investment and product teams to meet investors' objectives and manage tax risks effectively, and providing tax due diligence and transaction support on acquisitions, both for the Schroders group and on behalf of investors.

Peter Capper

Fund & Investment Risk Specialist , The Investment Association

Peter Capper is the Fund & Investment Risk Specialist at The Investment Association, which represents UK investment managers who manage more than £7.7 trillion for clients around the world.  Peter specialises in Funds, Fund regulation and Risk Management, and leads the IA’s work on the Value Assessment and the Long Term Asset Fund. Peter also works closely with the Depositary and Trustees Association (DATA), which represents the depositaries and trustees of UK domiciled funds, and is on the Funds Regulation Committee of the European Funds and Asset Management Association (EFAMA).

Peter is a Chartered Fellow of the Securities Institute. Prior to joining The Investment Association in 2014, Peter worked as a technical specialist for 13 years within the fund management industry.

Julie Patterson

Non-Executive Director

Julie is an Independent Non-Executive Director of fund management companies operating both authorised and unauthorised funds. She previously led on regulatory change for asset management in KPMG’s EMA FS Regulatory Insight Centre. Prior to joining KPMG in 2014, Julie spent 15 years at the Investment Association. In 2002, she established the regulatory function, covering investment management regulation, buy-side dealing, segregated mandates, capital requirements and operations. She then focused on directing the association’s work across all aspects of collective investment funds. Through many years of working with the European Federation (EFAMA), Julie acquired a broad knowledge of the different fund and distribution structures around Europe.

Melville Rodrigues

Head – Real Estate Advisory, Apex Group

Melville's practice focuses on the launch and operation of funds, including funds which hold underlying real estate investments in the UK as well as internationally. The funds have attracted institutional, private and retail investors.

In addition to servicing clients, he has been involved in representing industry bodies in their dialogue with the Treasury and the FCA. He is a regular contributor to the real estate press. Melville is the honorary legal adviser to the London Doughnut Economy Coalition.

Sheelan Shah

Partner, Investment Management Tax, Deloitte

Sheelan advises investment managers and institutional investors on setting up tax efficient investment fund structures in the UK and overseas jurisdictions providing advice from an investment and investor perspective. She currently leads the Deloitte UK tax reporting and compliance services in the real estate fund space.
