Rachel Portlock

Head of Research, AREF

Rachel is responsible for working with a number of AREF committees, including the Research, Corporate Governance and ESG & Impact Investing Committees.

Previous to joining, Rachel worked as an independent investment management professional in real estate and prior to this she spent 11 years at Aviva Investors in the Real Estate Team as a Strategist and six years at Henderson Global Investors.

Rachel has taken on a number of projects for AREF over the last few years, including the End of Fund Life Project, the Fund Structures Report, the History of AREF and also worked on the Open Ended Fund Pricing Project, in conjunction with INREV.

What is your current role at AREF?

I have been Head of Research for just over two years. As well as having responsibility for the Research Committee, I also look after both the Corporate Governance and ESG & Impact Investing Committees.

What is your background?

Before becoming a permanent member of staff, I worked for AREF on a number of projects, as a consultant, including the End of Fund Life and Open End Fund Pricing guidance. Before that, I was a member of the multi-manager team at Aviva Investors and the research team at Henderson Global Investors (now Nuveen). Like a huge swathe of the real estate industry, I began my career at IPD/MSCI – a long time ago!

Tell us something about yourself that we don’t know.

I am a farmer’s daughter, so I’m always interested to hear about anything agricultural related.

What do you enjoy most about working for AREF?

I really enjoy being part of the AREF team – they are a very friendly bunch! Also, working for a trade association allows me to catch up regularly with many of my past colleagues at events and meetings.
