Nature plays a critical role in the global economy, with more than half of the world’s GDP dependent on healthy natural systems. Protecting and sustainably managing our natural world is essential for ensuring long-term social and economic prosperity.
In the UK, the loss of key habitats over the past century has been staggering:
- Wildflower meadows: 97% decline, threatening pollinators and wildlife.
- Seagrass beds: 92% decline, harming marine ecosystems.
- Wetlands: 90% decline, impacting water quality, carbon storage, and flood protection.
- Ancient woodlands: 70% decline, diminishing vital ecosystems.
With the construction sector responsible for approximately 30% of biodiversity loss, there is an urgent need for change. However, integrating nature-based solutions into property development and management can protect asset values, create more resilient buildings, and contribute to climate change mitigation.
Our new video, 'Nature in Real Estate', sponsored and produced in partnership with Knight Frank, is designed to help fund managers navigate this critical issue. It provides practical guidance on incorporating biodiversity and natural capital considerations into every stage of the investment lifecycle, from acquisition to disposal.
As the UK ranks among the bottom 10% globally for nature depletion, fund managers are uniquely positioned to lead the way in restoring our natural environment. Watch the video to learn how you can drive positive change while safeguarding long-term value.

Nature in Real Estate Premiere Event
On Tuesday, 21 November, AREF members convened at Travers Smith in London for the premiere of AREF’s Nature in Real Estate video. The event opened with a compelling video from WWF, featuring Sir David Attenborough and other prominent voices sharing an urgent message about how businesses can address the nature crisis (link).
This was followed by the debut of AREF’s video, highlighting actionable steps the real estate industry can take to drive meaningful change (watch the video above).
Kathleen Jowett, of LaSalle Investment Management and Chair of AREF's ESG & Impact Investing Committee, presented key insights from the TNFD Fund survey.
A lively panel discussion featuring industry leaders — Chantal Beaudoin, Emily Hamilton, Alexander Newport, and Jessica Pilz — explored nature's vital role in driving global economic value and supporting decarbonisation efforts.
