Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) which are based on Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings

Highlights include:

  • Requires commercial property owners to improve their buildings to EPC band B by 2030.
  • There are increasingly significant fines for non-compliance and there is also a reputational risk for organisations in not meeting these standards.
  • We are still learning how regulations are being implemented and enforced, but the appetite for enforcement will only get stronger with the pressing need to meet net zero targets.
  • Regulation and broader drivers to reduce built environment emissions will only get stronger.

  • Regulation can often be seen as a burden – but should also be seen as a reputational opportunity for your organisation and your clients in the race to net zero.

  • Bring it down to a client level, what you are offering to your clients is that they can operate in healthier buildings that are more comfortable to work in, and more affordable to run. Research has shown that improving buildings can lead to increased commercial productivity, staff well-being and employee retention.

"The ‘why’ has been well established and now we must establish how and how fast? It is therefore crucial to create a balance between regulation – incentives - and industry and market driven action."

"You can no longer comply by changing your lightbulbs. We are now talking about significant fabric improvements and more efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning in buildings."
