On Wednesday evening, the UK’s real estate investment industry came together for one of its most highly anticipated events—the 22nd Annual AREF Dinner. Held at the iconic Savoy Hotel, the night saw over 350 attendees celebrating the year’s accomplishments, with the event proudly sponsored by JTC Group.

AREF Chair Anne Breen, Head of Real Estate at abrdn, delivered a thoughtful and forward-looking speech that set the tone for the evening.

A Message from Anne Breen, AREF Chair

Anne Breen began her speech by expressing her gratitude to the members who continuously contribute to the industry’s growth and professionalism. She thanked those who participated in AREF committees, attended events, and helped elevate the standards of the sector. She also extended her appreciation to JTC Group, the evening’s sponsor, and acknowledged the hard work of the AREF team.

Reflecting on her decision to take on the role of AREF Chair, Breen humorously recalled advice from her former CEO, who encouraged her to step up as a "strong voice" for the industry. She emphasised the importance of leadership and collective action in addressing the pressing issues facing the real estate sector. With challenges such as the lack of defined contribution (DC) pension fund investments, ambitious net-zero targets, and a complex planning system, Breen highlighted the need for a unified industry voice, particularly as the UK navigates a new government and macroeconomic cycle.

Breen noted that AREF is actively lobbying the new government to address legislative and regulatory challenges. She pointed out that the recent Budget response to Chancellor Rachel Reeves underscores the sector's critical role in driving the UK’s economic growth. She also praised the diverse voices shaping the industry's future, including AREF's FutureGen group, who are emerging as the next generation of leaders and innovators.

A Celebration of Industry Excellence

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the 13th edition of the AREF Annual Awards, honoring the individuals and organisations that have made outstanding contributions to the real estate investment sector. The winners of the night were:

  • Affiliate of the Year: The Citco Group Limited, represented by Nancy Thompstone
  • Outstanding Fund Achievement: Thriving Investments' Mid Market Rent (New Avenue Living) Fund, accepted by William Kyle
  • Research Award: PATRIZIA SE for their insightful paper on 'The Role of Amenities in Strategic Asset Selection,' presented by PD Dr. Marcelo Cajias
  • John Cartwright Award for Outstanding Individual Contribution: Patrick Groves from CMS UK, honored for his exceptional work in advancing the industry.

An Evening of Entertainment and Networking

After Breen's inspiring words, the night shifted to entertainment and celebration. Comedian Zoe Lyons lit up the room with her witty performance, keeping the audience in stitches. Adding to the lively atmosphere, the "Fiddling About" trio moved around the tables, playing musical requests and adding a unique interactive element to the dinner.

As the formal events wound down, the post-dinner soiree kicked off with live jazz performed by talented Masters students from the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama, providing a relaxed yet elegant end to the evening.

Looking Ahead

The success of this year’s AREF Annual Dinner would not have been possible without the collaboration of many. A heartfelt thank you goes to JTC Group for their sponsorship, the AREF team for their hard work, and all the members and guests who made the night truly special.

As plans for next year’s Annual Dinner and Awards are already underway, the bar has been set high, and we look forward to another year of celebrating excellence in the real estate investment industry.

Stay tuned for what’s to come!
