The AREF FutureGen Conference 2024 brought together the next generation of real estate professionals for an inspiring day at the historic Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Sponsored by Carey Olsen, the event featured a mix of keynote talks, breakout sessions, and panel discussions that offered both valuable industry insights and opportunities for professional growth.

Setting the Stage: Keynote by Mark Davy

The day began with a warm welcome from Clare Grimes, Chair of AREF's FutureGen Committee, followed by a keynote from Mark Davy, Founder and CEO of Futurecity. As a thought leader in urban regeneration and culture-led placemaking, Mark challenged delegates to rethink the purpose of buildings, offering insights drawn from Futurecity's global portfolio. His emphasis on the evolving role of cities in the context of logistics and build-to-rent developments set a visionary tone for the conference.

Breakout Sessions: Confidence, Communication, and Speed Networking

The morning continued with two concurrent breakout sessions. One, led by Amira Mansour, founder of The Communication Expert, focused on Confidence, Communication, and Mindset. This highly interactive session encouraged attendees to reflect on these essential skills for both professional and personal development.

Simultaneously, the second group participated in an engaging Speed Networking session, fostering connections and helping delegates expand their professional networks in a fun and dynamic setting.

Fireside Chat: Insights from Fidelity International

In the afternoon, Adrian Benedict, Head of Real Estate Solutions at Fidelity International, took the stage for an intimate Fireside Chat. Interviewed by William Lawrence, Adrian shared valuable career insights, including the importance of trust and integrity in real estate. He also discussed industry challenges and opportunities over the next decade, reflecting on his experiences navigating downturns and executing long-term strategies.

Impact Investing Panel: Shaping the Future of Real Estate

The day concluded with a thought-provoking panel discussion on Impact Investing, moderated by Frankie Demetriades. Panellists Yan Chan, Vivienne King, and Jessica Pilz explored the growing importance of Impact Investing, tackling topics such as what 'impact' truly means, global market approaches, and the UK’s new SDR regulations. The session underscored the societal and financial benefits of investing with a purpose, highlighting the importance of transparency and anti-greenwashing measures.

 

 

 

 

A Memorable Wrap-Up of Day 1

After an action-packed day of learning and networking, Clare Grimes reflected on the success of the conference, hoping that delegates left with valuable insights and new connections.

The day’s formal events were followed by punting on the River Cam and a delightful dinner at Parker's Tavern, offering attendees a chance to unwind and deepen their connections.

Day 2 Site Visits: Exploring Cambridge’s Real Estate Innovations

Day 2 began with a casual breakfast, allowing delegates one last chance to network and reflect on the highlights of Day 1. Attendees checked out of their accommodations before gathering to embark on the day’s main activities—exclusive site visits showcasing Cambridge's latest innovations in urban development.

Delegates had the opportunity to choose between two site visits, both providing fascinating insights into Cambridge’s evolving landscape:

  1. The Old Swiss: Cambridge's New Quarter for Innovation
    This visit offered a glimpse into one of Cambridge's most exciting new developments, showcasing how the city continues to lead in fostering innovation hubs.

  2. CB1 Development, Cambridge
    Alternatively, attendees explored the CB1 Development, the revitalisation of the Station Road area of Cambridge which continues to deliver a sustainable mixed-use community.  Those who attended enjoyed the tour of ‘CB1’ from Simon Wallis, Development Director at Brookgate. CB1 is . The development has transformed a once run down and unwelcoming environment into a diverse community comprising open spaces, retail, eco-friendly offices, and homes. Delegates very much enjoyed Simon’s enthusiasm.

Both visits allowed delegates to see first-hand the type of real estate projects discussed during the conference, tying the event’s themes of placemaking and impact investing to tangible developments.

Closing Remarks and Farewell

The conference officially ended at The Hotel Ibis over refreshments at midday, marking the close of one and half productive days filled with learning and collaboration. Attendees were encouraged to complete a feedback form, to help shape next year’s event.

The AREF FutureGen Conference 2024 was a testament to the bright future of real estate, fostering dialogue, collaboration, and innovation among the industry’s rising stars.  As the delegates departed, the Conference left them with fresh perspectives on the future of real estate and valuable new connections within the industry.
