In its Spring 2020 Budget, the government stated that it will ‘undertake a review of the UK’s funds regime during 2020'. AREF welcomes this statement, and is lobbying for a Professional Investor Fund (PIF) (Link to AREF PIF Submission) to address a gap in the UK’s fund offering. In this webinar, our expert speakers will explain the merits of the PIF proposal.

Christopher Austin

Head of Tax, Private Assets, Schroders

Christopher is an experienced tax advisor with over 20 years experience in the investment management industry.  He has been at Schroders since April 2006 and has expertise in a wide range of international taxes. Before Schroders he was at Deloitte for 8 years where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser, working in the banking, investment management, and real estate sectors as well as a period working on tax policy.

Christopher’s current focus is supporting the growth of the Private Assets business within Schroders through close working with the investment and product teams to meet investors' objectives and manage tax risks effectively, and providing tax due diligence and transaction support on acquisitions, both for the Schroders group and on behalf of investors.

Emma Cullen

Chief Operating Officer, Fiera Real Estate UK

Emma joined Fiera Real Estate, UK in 2007 and was appointed General Counsel before broadening her role to run the operational side of the business. Emma’s remit includes oversight of regulation, risk and legal alongside the firm’s digital transformation and inclusion and integration of ESG in all business processes.  Prior to Fiera Real Estate, Emma qualified as a lawyer specialising in real estate investment management at Forsters LLP. Emma is a Corporate Governance Committee member of the Association of Real Estate Funds (AREF).

Stephen Palmer

Director, DTZ Investors

Stephen is a highly experienced real estate investment manager with a strong track record of defining and executing profitable ideas using a variety of financial structures.

From 2005, he spent 11 years as the London-based Portfolio Manager for Alecta, Sweden’s largest pension fund, where he was responsible for the UK and continental European real estate business and the management of £1bn+ of investments. During this time, he assembled a £600m portfolio of indirect investments spread across the public and private markets which delivered exceptional returns for Alecta.

After Alecta closed its UK office in 2017, Stephen undertook various consulting assignments before joining DTZ Investors in July 2019 to manage a £300m portfolio of UK indirect investments.

Long committed to improving the efficiency of real estate markets, Stephen sits on the AREF Investor Committee and he recently contributed to the AREF/INREV sponsored report on Open Ended Fund Pricing.

Melville Rodrigues

Head – Real Estate Advisory, Apex Group

Melville's practice focuses on the launch and operation of funds, including funds which hold underlying real estate investments in the UK as well as internationally. The funds have attracted institutional, private and retail investors.

In addition to servicing clients, he has been involved in representing industry bodies in their dialogue with the Treasury and the FCA. He is a regular contributor to the real estate press. Melville is the honorary legal adviser to the London Doughnut Economy Coalition.

Anthony Shayle

Independent

Anthony Shayle formerly (until March 2020) Head of Real Estate Debt EMEA and  Portfolio Manager for UBS-PREMF within Real Estate Debt UK (RE-UK-DT), businesses-part of Real Estate & Private Markets within UBS Asset Management (UBS-AM). He was appointed Head of REUK-DT and Portfolio Manager for UBSPREMF in April 2013. In this role, he focused on growing the debt business within RE-UK-DT.

Anthony joined UBS-AM’s RE business in June 2009 as Head of RE-UK. This senior debt fund has deployed equity 1.4 times and as at September 2019 was showing an IRR at portfolio level of > 8%.

Prior to joining UBS, Anthony worked for AXA REIM (20052009), where he was initially Head of Business Development and Marketing UK and then Regional Head of UK, Benelux and Nordics. Anthony held various senior investment asset management, debt structuring, finance and accounting positions in the area of private equity and real estate in Curzon Global Partners, AXA REIM (in a previous period), RODAMCO, UBS, BZW and Bankers Trust. Over the last 20 years he has raised circa €2.3 billion of equity for real estate investment and debt strategies representing approximately €5.5 billion potential AUM.

Anthony is both a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and the Royal institution of Chartered Surveyors.
