The AREF ESG & Impact Investing Committee is dedicated to collaborating with AREF members to champion and enhance awareness of ESG & impact investing standards within the real estate fund management sector. Committee members:

  • Offer valuable sustainability perspectives on industry developments affecting the commercial real estate sector and AREF's membership.
  • Participate actively in networks, industry associations, and engage with members to influence the trajectory of critical issues and regulatory frameworks.
  • Embed sustainability best practices throughout AREF's operations.

Collaborations & Partnerships

The AREF ESG & II Committee has strong links with other organisations immersed in sustainability. Some of the relationships are highlighted below:

We hosted two social impact trainings in conjunction with the Good Economy for members involved in this area of real estate investment which included discussion around the potential implications for property valuations.

The Committee worked to compile the combined 2023 GRESB results from AREF members. GRESB assesses and benchmarks the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance of real assets, providing standardised and validated data to the capital markets.  We have also produced a video series on GRESB which can be viewed here.

The Green Property Alliance Paul Richards, CEO of AREF, sits on the committee, whose purpose is to stimulate industry-wide engagement with the sustainability challenges and opportunities facing the real estate industry.

In conjunction with CREFC, AREF has launched the Sustainable Value: ESG Risks in Commercial Real Estate Lending publication that considers common approaches sustainability and ESG risks in real estate valuations for commercial lending.

AREF and BBP have collaborated on several events, including a panel discussion considering the challenges and solutions associated with carbon emissions from tenant activities in buildings (link).

The Committee worked collaboratively with INREV to produce a short video and a white paper on Nature and Biodiversity in Real Estate.
